What Is Chromia?

Chromia is a blockchain platform that uses a relational database model, making it fundamentally different from most blockchains. While platforms like Ethereum store data in a format that's difficult to query and work with, Chromia stores data in a way that's similar to how traditional databases (like MySQL or PostgreSQL) work. This makes it much easier for developers to build complex applications.

The CHR token is used for hosting decentralized applications, paying fees, and staking within the Chromia ecosystem.

The Problem It Solves

Developing applications on most blockchains requires working with data in unnatural ways. Blockchain storage is essentially a key-value store — you can look up individual records but can't easily run complex queries like "show me all users who made more than 5 transactions last month." This forces developers to use workarounds and off-chain databases, adding complexity and reducing the decentralization benefits.

Additionally, most blockchains charge per operation, making complex applications prohibitively expensive. A social media app on Ethereum, for example, would cost users gas fees for every post, like, and comment — clearly impractical for consumer applications.

How It Works

Think of most blockchains as filing cabinets where everything is stored in individual folders. If you want to find all documents from last month that mention a specific topic, you'd have to open every single folder and check. Chromia is more like a searchable digital database where you can run that query instantly.

Chromia achieves this by building its blockchain on a relational database engine. Each decentralized application runs on its own blockchain (called a "dapp chain") with its own relational database. Developers write applications using Rell, a programming language designed to feel like SQL (the standard database query language), making it immediately familiar to millions of developers.

Each dapp chain can set its own fee model, including free-for-users models where the application developer covers costs — enabling consumer-friendly apps without blockchain fee friction.

Why It Matters

Chromia's relational database approach makes it uniquely suited for data-intensive applications like games, social networks, and enterprise systems that need complex data queries. This addresses one of blockchain's biggest adoption barriers: developer experience.

The project complements the broader blockchain ecosystem where Ethereum provides smart contract security, Solana offers raw transaction speed, and Polkadot enables cross-chain communication. Chromia adds something different — a developer-friendly data model that bridges the gap between traditional application development and blockchain.
